SGM once again at Stockholm City Hall
The Nobel Banquet is the highest profile event of the year in Sweden, as well as being recognized and watched worldwide. Hosted by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and the Nobel Foundation, the banquet is held immediately after the prestigious Nobel Prize Award ceremony each year. It has been held annually on December 10th in the Stockholm City Hall since 1934 and is attended by the King and Queen of Sweden and other members of the Royal Family, plus approximately 1,300 guests, including Nobel Laureates, politicians, dignitaries and other VIPs.
A lighting design suited to a high profile event
Per Sundin was again called in as Lighting Designer for the event, an honour bestowed on him for twelve consecutive years now. Ola Melzig was Production Manager, overseeing all aspects of lighting and video from build-up through to broadcast.
The best SGM LED fixtures for colouring tradition
- 4 SGM Palco 5 were used as uplights on the City Hall Tower. Rising 106 metres above the City Hall, the Tower was illuminated with warm colours. Per Sundin chose Palco 5 fixtures, with W-DMX as standard, because their narrow beams enabled them to outline the silhouettes, creating a suggestive play on colour nuances.
- 32 SGM Genio Mobile IP 65 were used for the last section of the tower.
The fixtures were positioned as a “crown” at the base of the section, accentuating the arches with two different colours.

- 8 SGM Genio Mobile were used on the The Prince’s Gallery, where the King holds a reception for the Nobel Laureates.
The SGM LED colour changers were placed along the wall in order to create striking light effects on the Prince Eugen fresco painting entitled “The Shores of Stockholm”.

The result
“Stockholm City Hall is a challenging venue,” Melzig explained, “There are no rigging points, no ramps, we have to be extremely conscious of our power consumption and absolutely everything needs to be hidden when possible. The LED colour changers were supplied by SGM’s Swedish distributor Interlite.
